Tayport Harbour and Marina

Tayport Harbour and Marina

Tayport Harbour is a great place to start and finish this fabulous 4 mile walk requiring approx 1hr 30 minutes to complete, give or take 15-20min.

A full screen animated route map for Tayport-Serpentine Walk has been mapped and shared with the plotaroute.com route planner.

You'll find adequate parking and public toilets on the harbourside. There is also a highly rated cafe just across the street on corner of Broad Street and Tay Street. If you fancy a bar meal, before or after, try Cobbies Inn located just 100yds along Tay Street, they do great bar meals.

Section 1 - Tayport to Serpentine Ave
Start by heading out of the car park and walk up Broad Street passing the Harbour Cafe and then Tayport Barbers on your left. Once you've rounded the corner Broad Street becomes Castle Street with an array of shops and small businesses. This is a good place to pick up a little snack or refreshment. Continue up Castle Street until you reach the junction with a small mini roundabout near Tayport Primary School. Stop here for a moment, turn to your left and admire Tayport Old Kirk. This is Tayport's equivalent of the Leaning Tower of Pisa with a steeple which leans to the right. It is also the oldest building in town established in 1607.

Now, cross the street and head over to the garage (Willison Motors) on the corner of Queen Street and Craig Road. Continue walking up Craig Road for next 400 hundred metres and you will eventually walk out into open farmland. There's a white sign showing that you are entering Scotscraig Estate. Follow the road which now narrows down to a wide lane as far as the junction at the Lodge House. From this point you get a nice view of the Tay Estuary and Tentsmuir forest in the distance. Follow the road to the left, leading back downhill. At bottom of this descent turn right at the junction and follow the single track road leading West along a lovely tree lined route (Inverdovat Road).

Scotscraig Estate - Entrance to Serpentine Ave

Continue on the Inverdovat road for approx 500m (13 minutes) until you reach an opening on the right side of road with a gate.  This is an entrance to Scotscraig estate and southern end of Serpentime Ave.  Enter via the gate ensuring you close and reset the latch on the gate.

Section 2 - Serpentime Ave
Follow the track into the estate and as the trees thin out you'll reach an opening with an opportunity to stop and admire the view over Tayport and beyond to Tentsmuir Forest in the distance.

The track now leads up a shallow incline past a further opening in the trees as you pass the old walled gardens of Scotscraig Mansion House (no longer existing). Continue straight ahead following the track into the forest and through the estate. The track becomes a little rougher as you head over the brow of the hill with views opening up to the left over farmland. Eventually the path starts to descend. Keep straight ahead and the track will then zig zag to the right and then left with views of Dundee and Broughty Ferry eventually opening up.  Continue to bottom of the path where you'll eventually reach a large vehicle gate with a kissing gate to the right hand side

Section 3 - Fife Coastal Path to Tayport
Take great care and crossover the road (B946) turning right (Eastwards) onto the path which forms part of the Fife Coastal Path Network. After a few hundred metres the path veres left away from the main B946 road. The path now follows the old railway line down into the heart of Tayport. You'll pass Tayport's lighthouses on left side on the banks of the river. Tayport West or High Light is the white lighthouse and Tayport East or Low light is smaller of the two.

Follow the path through the trees and eventually you'll join a tarmac lane which comes from the lighthouse cottages. Alternatively turn off left at any point and join the lane at an earlier stage.  Follow the lane across the old bridge and then at Fairy Lane turn left and follow the path down the slope. This leads down to the waterside and eventually back to the harbour.
